I've been thinking about early animation. Specifically Disney films, and the more I think about it, the more amazed I am by the meticulous detail but into each frame. I am not artist myself, however I can appreciate the time an effort it would take to put together even a small feature. I'm sure this appreciation is inflated 10 fold in the eyes of a real artist.
Another thing I was simply amazed by was the talented work of pin-board artists. A pin-board is basically a board with a ton of pins in it, and you create images by pushing pins in and out to different lengths. We observed a feature that was of significant length and I found in simply amazing.
We also watched a feature done entirely in silhouettes. They used a multi layer system with one artist devoted entirely backgrounds. The artists used a large machine that was about 9 feet tall, and each incorporated their own part of the scene. I thought it was incredibly complex.

Sounds like you are starting to appreciate the amount of time and effort that goes into all forms of animation. I can't imagine having to draw and redraw the same image, but just slightly different, like the old disney animators had to do to pull off their stories. I agree with you about Prince Achmed, that was a ridiculously precise film using cut-outs with hinges. For me, the pin board was the most impressive of all. To be able to capture shadows and the appropriate lighting effects by using that apparatus was absolutely amazing.
ReplyDeleteI was really impressed by the pin boards as well. That second example, "Mindscape" or something like that, was rediculous with all the detailed they added in. I can't even imagine how meticulous a process that was.
ReplyDeleteLike everyone else has expressed I also was amazed by the pin board animations. I couldn't image putting in the time to create even one still image much less a full animation. The way the artists could create such detail with just the precise movements of the pins how that effected the shadows.
ReplyDeleteAgain, another person really amazed by the pin board animation, everything technical about it is really amazing to me. How the differences between light and dark shades of the pins depending how much you push or pull the them in or out. It all looks so real on the screen, i'd never guess it was used with many pins on a board. The time and dedication to move the pins intricately for each shot is amazing, it think art like this, in animation because it takes so much time, dedication, and precision is by my favorite.
